Dr. Chin Chon Min was here last week on a lecture tour. We interviewed him. He said there can be good Doctors and bad doctors, as much as there could be good lawyers and bad lawyers. (The press suggested good wives and bad wives (Said in jest), he said if a Dr. could not do any good he should not do any harm.
He is senior consultant Urologist Mount Elizabeth Medical Center, (Singapore), Adjunct Associate Professor, National University of Singapore, Visiting Consultant Urologist, National University Hospital, Vice President, Singapore Urological Association, Life Member Society for Continence (Singapore).
Dr. Chin was invited by the College of Medicine, Colombo, to conduct two lectures on Da Vinci Robotic surgery. Subjects covered included men’s health; Bladder, prostates, and the benefits of Robot surgery, and that such caused little or no post operative trauma.
He said prostate surgery was bloody and damaging. Other organs were at risk, and the cavity for real surgery small, and sometimes difficult to reach . Surgical area being restrictive placed severe limits on the surgeon and operative area limited.
Newest technology however, being the Robot now introduced a completely new dimension to such surgical procedure.
Having the machine in place was not placating in its influence. But to have the machine effectively functional had to have trained personnel. It was then that its full potential could be realized and its effective use implemented meaningfully. The Robot was extremely expensive, did not quite fit random surgical situations.
Unless operated by a team of trained persons who had to have medical qualifications as well; the machine would not have its effective adjunct usefulness. The team of surgeons too had to know its usefulness, he said. Quite like owning a high powered car and not using its full potential.
Technology at hand was not in itself an advantage, but its effective use was.
Prostate cancer was now more prevalent than before because of changed eating habits. Junk foods, fast food out lets, life expectancy increasing,; coupled with the converse situation of lax eating habits ; of not consuming fruits and vegetables, all contribute to the problem of Prostate cancer. Particularly men.
Could a person have pre-emptive knowledge of a prostate problem? The answer was ‘yes’. Through a given test and its application. That being the PSA test. Or Prostate Specific Antigen’
The entire procedure would cost, including all ancillary needs, in Singapore, approximately $S 28,000 .Same procedure costs $40,000 in the US. It was therefore far cheaper for Asians particularly to have such procedure carried out in Singapore.
‘What about the Indians’?
Yes India too has the technology and are now a contributory location where people could have the procedure done.
Why would a patient seek a second opinion?
There are symptom related diagnosis, if misinterpreted could cause doubts in minds of patients. It was then not unreasonable that they seek another opinion, and take treatment accordingly.
He said medicine is not perfect. It could have a personal bias not necessarily inter-related, but such could border on mistrust and provoke a second opinion.
Dr. Chin said he had completed about 40 operations since he started in 1994. They were all successful.
He was careful who he would accept for surgery. He would not carry out such surgery on a 70 year old man, because possibility of the person dying on the operating table was more probable than in instance of a younger man.
As for good and bad Doctors, there were the black sheep in any circumstance. Not an extraordinary position.
