Nearly 1 million American children may have been misdiagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, not because they have real behaviour problems but because they were the youngest in their kindergarten, researchers say. Children who are the youngest in their grades are 60 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than the oldest children, a study from Michigan State University has found. A second study, by researchers at North Carolina State University and elsewhere, came to similar conclusions. Both are scheduled for publication in the Journal of Health Economics. Misdiagnosing children can have long-lasting effects, said Todd Elder, an assistant professor of economics and author of the Michigan State study. In fifth and eighth grades, the youngest children in a class were more than twice as likely to use Ritalin, a stimulant commonly prescribed for ADHD, compared with the oldest students, his study says. While many parents say Ritalin has helped their children, it also can have significant side effects, causing headaches, dizziness and even high blood pressure, the North Carolina State paper says. The findings could influence the way teachers evaluate children with ADHD symptoms - as well as complicate parents' decisions about when to start children in kindergarten, Professor Elder said. Although cut-off dates for kindergarten vary by state, the most common date is September 1, he said. In states using that date, those who turn five by September 1 could start kindergarten, while those with September 2 birthdays would have to wait a year. Regardless of the date chosen, some children in a class are always going to be a year older than others, Professor Elder said. Teachers and paediatricians - who make the diagnoses and prescribe treatments - should evaluate children based on their age, not their grade, he said. Did you hear an enormous thud around 3 p.m. yesterday? That was the sound of Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius throwing her scientists under a bus.
Earlier this week, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, the government's major medical advisory panel, announced that they could no longer support routine mammographies for women under the age of 50 who were not in a high risk group for breast cancer.
hey said that the number of cancer cases detected from such screening was too low, and that too many biopsies and further tests were being done in women who had hard-to-interpret test results but who turned out not to have the disease.
Emotional, snide — and even paranoid — accusations plagued the recommendation to end routine mammograms for women under 50. Some wondered why there were no true breast cancer experts on the panel. Still others suggested that the whole report was written with an eye toward the billions of dollars being spent on screening every year. And a few even wondered that if this was about men's health, rather than women's, would these scientists have been so quick to yank the plug on a screening test?
Critics of health reform sneered that this is what Obama has in mind for all of us if the government gets its cheap hands on health care — cutbacks in crucial medical benefits now enjoyed by those with private insurance. |
